Tips On How to Develop Good Habits

One of the most powerful sayings by Aristotle reads: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit." What it simply means is that you can channel your energy and purpose to be who you want to be by forming the right habits and sticking to them. The big challenge people have is knowing how to develop good habits and stick with them. Some of the tips you can use to create good habits include:

1. Have goals

This is the first step towards achieving good habits. Ask yourself why you need these habits, and formulate a plan on how you are going to put the plans into action. If your goal is to lose weight and you want to form a habit of exercising regularly and eating right, then you must have a comprehensive plan on how to go about it.
For example: To achieve my goal, I am going to run every evening after work, and I will also cut down on the amount of sugar and processed food that I take.

2. Fix your new habit into your routine:

For the habit to stick, you have to put it into your routine and internalize it. You can either write down a schedule that caters for your new habit, or put a reminder during the first days to ensure that you do what you purposed to do. With time, after it has gotten into your system and stuck, you will not need to get reminders to nudge you towards doing it.

3. Have self discipline:

You have to acknowledge that developing new habits is not going to be easy. You will have to keep pushing yourself for you to achieve it. It takes a lot of self drive and determination for a habit to stick. Always remind yourself of the reason why you felt like you need to develop good habits whenever you get overwhelmed.

4. Reward yourself:

Whenever you feel like you have made some great progress in making the good habits stick, then reward yourself. This will make you feel good for taken charge of your life, and doing something positive. You can buy yourself a gift, or even watch a movie as a gift to yourself.

5. Ask for support:

If you are trying to break from a bad habit, you may need to ask for support to avoid going back. You do not have to get professional help. Ask for help from your friends, and request them to be your accountability partners in your journey towards forming good habits.
